What We'll Cover

COPYWRITING FOR FREELANCERS COURSE OVERVIEW

Across eight sessions, here's what you'll learn, explore and leave with:

Working with Briefs

Freelance copywriting rarely begins with a blank page. It begins with an advert, a brief or a proposal.

In the first session, you'll look at some real-world examples of client briefs and practice working on some examples of your own. By learning to ask the right questions, identify what's missing, and check the scope of the project, you can set yourself up to deliver work that lands.

Writing for Different Industries

When freelancing, you won't always have control over the industries you work in.

Every industry has its own language and conventions. You'll explore how to adapt your writing style and tone for different sectors, so you can take on a wider range of clients with confidence. You'll also learn what to do when clinets don't know how to connect with their audience and how to navigate that without friction.

Brand Voice & Tone of Voice Documents

As a freelance copywriter, more often than not you'll be required to write in a tone of voice that doesn't match your own.

In this session, you'll learn how to identify and capture a brand's tone of voice, work with existing guidelines and, when there aren't any, create your own from scratch with a few simple techniques.

The Intersection of Copywriting and SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

Good copy needs to be discoverable and, if you're writing for the internet, you're likely going to be asked whether you're familiar with SEO.

Don't worry if you're not. You'll explore the fundamentals of search engine optimisation in this session, including how to research and use keywords naturally, structure copy for readability and write in a way that works for both the people you're writing for and search engines.

Writing Across Platforms

A freelancer's toolkit has to cover a lot of ground.

To make sure that's achievable, you'll develop your ability to write across multiple formats, from landing pages and email campaigns to social media and case studies, understanding how tone, length, and structure shift depending on where your copy lives. You'll also practice handling word counts and design constraints.

Pitching and Proposals

You could write the best copy in the world, but winning work is a skill in itself that often requires a little bit of practice.

In the sixth session, you'll learn how to write a compelling pitch, structure a proposal, present your ideas clearly to clients and position yourself as the right person for the job. In copywriting, we're often judged on our ability to sell ourselves.

Building Relationships Through Copy

When freelancing, the copy you write isn't just about the words you choose to put down on the page, but the relationships you build with your clients.

To support those relationships, you'll explore how to manage client feedback, navigate revisions professionally, set clear expectations, and build the kind of working relationships that lead to clients who will keep coming back to you.

Presenting a Portfolio

You can't land clients without work to show them.

In this final session, you'll learn what makes a strong copywriting portfolio, how to present your best work and how to keep building it even when you're just starting out. We'll look at some real-world examples of copywriting portfolios and discuss when it's the right time to have more than one on the go.

The Final Project

Your final project begins in your very first session. Each week, as you build your skills, you'll apply what you've learned directly to a brief we provide. By the end of the course, you'll have a developed, refined portfolio of work to submit ahead of your 1:1 session.

1:1 Session

At the end of the course, you'll have a dedicated 30-minute session with your tutor. You'll get personalised feedback on your Final Project, talk through anything you want to explore further and leave with a clear sense of where your copywriting can take you next.
